Ryedale Linux User Group Previous Meetings

Meeting at the Brooklyn Centre on St George's Day, I had hopes that we might get a bunch of machines together and experiment with the likes of X forwarding and other networking type activities, but I was run off my feet and hadn't time to pull my desktop machine apart to bring to the meet.  I'd hoped to encourage a friend whose talked about installing GNU/Linux for a while to come over and take the plunge and have us install Damn Small Linux for her, but she couldn't make it either.

So, we started the evening off in a very chilled out manner instead with Paul T, Dave, Ash and myself sat around a table drinking tea and chatting.  About 9 o'clock we noticed a shadowy shape lurking in the corridor and upon investigating found another *nix user.  As it happened, it was two people trying to find us.  Mike Drawneek and his son John had made the effort to come over from Scarborough.  Mike particularly wanted to talk about Software Freedom Day, he's the contact point for SFD for Scarborough, so we spent some time discussing this and how we might do somethind ourselves come Sept.  For more look at the SFD site.

Having read that we intended to have machines, they wished to join in too and both had laptops with them.  John was kind enough to demonstrate his SuSE machine which uses XFCE as it's window manager.  Thanks John!  Much chat ensued and I think we'd all have been happy to stay a lot longer had we not had a time limit on the room.
